Yoga and mindfulness empower youth (and those who support them) to strongly face challenges and changes and encourage social, emotional, and mental health and well-being. The tools of yoga and mindfulness have been shown to decrease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorderand encourage resilience. Similarly, yoga and mindfulness practices develop youth’s physical strength and flexibility, increased concentration and focus, and the ability to self-soothe in times of stress. When youth have opportunities to practice yoga and mindfulness regularly, they cultivate lifelong resources to navigate everyday stress and life challenges.
The Oxygen Project: Yoga for Youth, 501c3, offers school-age youth these powerful tools through a curriculum aligned with social-emotional learning standards, delivered by yoga instructors trained in guiding youth in a trauma-sensitive manner. The Oxygen Project also supports schools as well as youth development and mental health organizations through yoga and mindfulness self-care programming for staff, since we believe that in order to take care of our youth, staff must take care of themselves and one another.
